Dalam silsilah agama Buddha Mazhab Tantrayana atau
Vajrayana, Naropa adalah salah seorang Guru Besar. Sedangkan dalam
silsilah guru-guru sekte Kargyupa dari Tantrayana, Naropa menempati
urutan kedua setelah gurunya, Tilopa. Kemudian, setelah
Naropa(1016-1100), munculah Marpa (1012-1097), Milarepa (1040-1123),
Gampopa(1052-1135), dan Karmapa(1110-????).
Dikisahkan bahwa Naropa terlahir sebagai seorang Pangeran di India. Namun, ada kisah lain yang menyebutkan bahwa beliau berasal dari keluarga penjual anggur di India. Dalam kisah sebagai seorang pangeran, diceritakan bahwa sejak bayi Naropa telah memiliki keistimewaan seperti membuat banyak orang menjadi senang dan bahagia hanya karena menatap-Nya. Para anggota kerajaan pun beranggapan bahwa beliau itu ibarat sebuah permata yang tidak pantas untuk tinggalkan di tengah-tengah orang di dunia. Untuk itu, beliau ditempatkan untuk tinggal di Vihara dimana terdapat banyak orang yang meremehkan Dharma.
Dalam aliran Tantrayana sangat besar peran guru dalam proses pencerahan muridnya. Bahkan inisiasi sorang Tantrika tak mungkin lepas dari hubungan dan kedekatanya dengan sang guru. Begitulah yang terjadi pada Naropa terhadap muridnya Marpa, marpa kepada Milarepa dan seterusnya.

Old WomanOne day, when he was reading a sutra, suddenly appeared an old woman who is very ugly. It's wrinkle-faced woman and toothless. He asked, "What are you reading? "Naropa replied," I'm studying the teachings of the Buddha, "the woman retorted," What are you reading? The old lady replied, "Yes, my brother" Tilopa "can understand it."Hearing the name Tilopa called, suddenly emerged a sense of loyalty in the minds and hearts of Naropa, so the tears. Naropa then asked where he could meet with Tilopa. The old lady replied, bahwaTilopa exists anywhere, and if your mind is full of devotion and faith, and a determined will mmengetahui the right direction where Tilopa was. After giving an answer serti, the woman who is actually Vajrayogini (woman ascetic) had disappeared. Since the incident, pleaded to be left Naropa Nalanda. Naropa immediately salute and asked to be a disciple, but Tilopa said only a nobleman like Naropa inappropriate apprenticed to a fisherman like himself. Then, Tilopa went away. However, Naropa trying to catch up. Tilopa Naropa face just to walk but not able to pursue it even if he ran.Bringing the pain of EnlightenmentWhen Tilopa was sitting on a cliff, Tilopa Naropa asked to jump jumping as a condition to be diterimasebagai students. Naropa then do it, plunge from the steep cliffs of the bones and joints were broken. Tilopa healed with a touch of softness. Sentelah recovered, Tilopa slapped with sandals to faint. And then his teacher Naropa reached a level of enlightenment.After a quiet, Tilopa explained why he applies abusive. This is done because of the negative qualities of Naropa could not be purified by his own efforts. Only by actually suffering, Naropa be purified. dengan julukan “penjaga pintu gerbang Nalanda”.

Suatu hari, ketika beliau sedang membaca sebuah Sutra, tiba-tiba muncul seorang wanita tua yang sangat jelek. Wanita itu bermuka kerut dan tak bergigi. Dia bertanya,”Apa yang sedang kau baca? ”Naropa menjawab, ”Saya sedang mempelajari ajaran Sang Buddha”, Wanita tersebut kembali bertanya”, Apa yang sedang kau baca?” Naropo menjawab, ”Saya sedang mempelajari ajaran Sang Buddha”, Wanita itu kembali bertanya, ”Apa kau memahaminya? ”Naropa menjawab, ”Saya memahami setiap kata tersebut.”

dimana saja, dan apabila pikiranmu penuh dengan kesetiaan dan keyakinan,
serta bertekad kuat maka akan mmengetahui arah yang tepat dimana Tilopa
berada. Setelah memberikan jawaban serti itu, wanita yang sebenarnya
adalah Vajrayogini (petapa wanita) itu menghilang. Semenjak kejadian
itu, Naropa memohon untuk dapat meninggalkan Nalanda. Yang kemudian
dengan berat hati kepergiaanya direlakan oleh guru dan teman-temannya.
Berguru pada Tilopa
Dalam
usaha pencarian Tilopa, Naropa mengalami kelaparan dan kehausan yang
luar biasa. Begitu pula dengan terpaan alam yang dahsyat pun dialaminya.
Tetapi, semua cobaan dan rintangan itu tak menyurutkan niatnya. Apa
yang beliau alami tersebut kemudian dikenal sebagai,”Dua belas
pengalaman menakutkan yang dialami Naropa”, Diantaranya anjing galak,
binatang liar, ular berbisa, wanita mengerikan dan lain-lain.
Setiap
kali menghadapi pengalaman tersebut, Naropa mendengar suara menggelegar
dari langit yang menyatakan bahwa hal tersebut merupakan manifestasi
dari gurunya. Akhirnya suara dari langit memberitahu bahwa yang dicari
itu sudah dekat .Sesampainya di suatu desa, secara tiba-tiba beliau
mengetahui bahwa Tilopa adalah seorang nelayan.
Ketika
bertemu dengan Tilopa, Naropa melihatnya sedang memindahkan kesadaran
dari setiap ekor ikan ke suatu alam suci hanya dengan memetikkan
jari-jari tangannya sebelum dipersiapkan untuk dijual. Naropa segera
menghormat dan meminta untuk dijadikan murid, tetapi Tilopa hanya
berkata seorang bangsawan seperti Naropa tidak pantas berguru kepada
seorang nelayan seperti dirinya. Lalu, Tilopa pun pergi. Namun, Naropa
berusaha mengejarnya. Tilopa hanya berjalan tapi Naropa tatap saja tidak
mampu mengejarnya walaupun sambil berlari.

Ketika
Tilopa sedang duduk di sebuah tebing, Tilopa meminta Naropa agar terjun
meloncat sebagai syarat untuk dapat diterimasebagai muridnya. Kemudian
Naropa melakukannya, terjun dari tebing yang curam sehingga
tulang-tulang dan sendinya patah. Tilopa menyembuhkannya dengan sentuhan
lembutnya. Sentelah sembuh, Tilopa menamparnya dengan menggunakan
sendalnya hingga pingsan. Dan kemudian Naropa mencapai pencerahan
setingkat gurunya.
Setelah tenang, Tilopa
menjelaskan kenapa beliau berlaku kejam. Hal ini dilakukan karena
sifat-sifat negatif Naropa tidak bisa disucikan dengan usahanya sendiri.
Hanya dengan benar-benar mengalami penderitaan, Naropa dapat
tersucikan. Lapisan karat yang terlalu kasar tidak akan dapat
dihilangkan bila mengunakan kain dan tangan yang halus, tapi harus
dengan bahan yang sangat keras atau bahkan lebih keras. Demikian pula
dengan menghadapi karma buruk Naropa, kekerasan dan ketegasan guru
sangat diperlukan.
Setelah mencapai pencerahan,
Tilopa menjamin bahwa mereka berdua tidaklah terpisah dimasa lalu,
sekarang, dan masa yang akan dating. Mereka ibarat matahari dan bulan.
Selanjutnya Naropa dan Tilopa, kedua murid dan guru tersebut aktif
memutar roda Dharma ke seluruh dunia. Dalam aliran Tantrayana sangat besar peran guru dalam proses pencerahan muridnya.
